Obverse: "MARC OTACI SEVERA AVG" Diademed and draped bust right, on crescent Mint and Year: Antioch - undated (AD 247 - 249) Weight: 3.48 grams Die axis: 15 degrees Rarity: rare, Bland #10, Qty. known = 9 Reverse: "PIETAS AVG . N" Pietas (Piety, Dutifulness) standing half-left, holding globe and short scepter; child standing before her. Note: Philip collector, Ignasi Serrahima, brought it to my attention that this coin, as well as the RIC plate coin, have an unusual variation of the obverse legend "MARC OTACI SEVERA AVG" without the "L" in OTACIL. Nice catch Ignasi and thank you for the feedback. |

Obverse: "MARCIA OTAC-ILIA SEVERA AVG" Diademed and draped bust right, on crescent Mint and Year: Antioch - undated (AD 244-246) Weight: 3.92 grams Die axis: 195 degrees Rarity: rare with later obverse legend, previously unknown with this legend. Bland #Unlisted, Qty. known = 0 (now 1) Reverse: "PIETAS AVG . N" Pietas (Piety, Dutifulness) standing half-left, holding globe and short scepter; child standing before her. Note: The Antioch mint employed a long form of the obverse legend for its initial issue, then promptly replaced it with the abbreviated legend (see previous coin). This was the first recorded antoninianus of Otacilia with the long legend. There is now (December 2004) a second specimen with this obverse, but the CONCORDIA AVGVSTI reverse, It is being offered in the Gemini auction at the NY International. Anyone wishing to buy that coin and donate it to my collection so that both specimens are together will earn my sincere thanks. Oh yes, the estimate for the other specimen is $3,500. Good luck. |

Obverse: "OTACIL SEVERA AVG" Diademed and draped bust right, on crescent Mint and Year: Rome - undated (AD 248-249) Weight: 2.62 grams Die axis: 15 degrees Rarity: common Reverse: "PIETAS AVGVSTAE" Pietas (Piety, Dutifulness) standing half-left, holding box of perfume and raising right hand.. Note: This reverse has the right arm up quite high compared to the normal reverse on the next example. Philip I Felicitas coins moved from the raised arm to an extended arm. that may have occurred here as well suggesting that this coin could be an early issue of this reverse. The weight of this example is a concern and may indicate an unofficial issue. |
